Serenity & privacy in the Seychelles

Recently voted the best coastal villa in Africa, the secluded luxury retreat Sea Monkey Villa, on the island of Mahe in the Seychelles, is the ideal location for an exclusive vacation. Baroque Villas takes a look

The magnificent Seychelles archipelago in the Indian Ocean just off the coast of Africa is renowned as one of the most glorious destinations for a paradise island getaway. Celebrities and those who can afford it travel here to rent out entire islands, or parts thereof, to enjoy the privacy and beauty of some exquisite slices of paradise.

The Sea Monkey Villa is certainly not the first secluded luxury retreat to win an award; it includes a long list of equally extravagant and exclusive establishments. But it’s certainly the newest to garner attention. Voted by World Boutique Hotel Awards as ‘Africa’s Best Beach or Coastal Villa’ in November 2016, this establishment is different from the others in many ways. For starters, it’s not located on its own island. It’s situated in the northern part of the main island of the Seychelles, Mahe in the exclusive region of Glacis, just 20 minutes drive from the capital town of Victoria.

The villa’s location is quite unique and makes it extremely secluded. It’s set on a promontory that separates itself from the rest of the island by huge boulders. The fact that it’s located on Mahe is an added advantage. It’s close to the airport, yet far away enough from the madding crowds to be completely private.

The rocky peninsula on which the boutique hotel is located offers guests breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding sea. There are only four double rooms at the villa, each with private en suite bathrooms and a private balcony. The villa includes two fully equipped kitchens, an upper and lower veranda, and an infinity pool with views of the sea lapping onto the sculptured granite rocks. There is an outside gazebo with a dining area, as well as a large living area with dining room and bar. Designed to blend into the lush tropical vegetation, the villa is decorated with sleek wooden furniture and stylish natural décor.

Guests enjoy outdoor and indoor surround sound systems, TV, high speed WiFi, a selection of water sports equipment including three kayaks plus items for snorkeling and fishing, luxury sunbeds and a table tennis table. The surroundings are renowned for their abundant sandy beaches and exquisite coral reefs. The villa is also close to the vibrant area of Beau Vallon Bay, home to numerous restaurants, bars and local markets.

Guests don’t have to leave the villa if they don’t want to, as there are so many activities available like yoga instruction and massage. In addition, there is a private chef on call to make sure they are well fed and a butler to make sure they are pampered to the hilt.

To win this esteemed award, hotels are chosen by a panel of travel industry experts, luxury travel journalists and guests. With such acclaim, a stay here can only be exemplary. A slice of paradise down south

In the southern hemisphere, it’s summer right now, so if you’d like to escape the cold, which has hit with a vengeance in the past few weeks, why not consider a trip to South Africa to explore the magnificent Western Cape coastline? Baroque Villas has found a treasure there, called Sugar Shack, a beautifully refurbished fisherman’s cottage in the quaint fishing town of Paternoster

Sugar Shack offers a rustic but ultra luxurious holiday with plenty of style and every modern convenience just two minutes from the beach. It’s the ideal location to sit sipping sundowners and watch a magnificent sunset over the ocean as the fishing boats return with their bounty. Whether you’re looking for a family getaway, an adventure with friends or an intimate weekend for the two of you, this idyllic little cottage is ideal.

Painted white in the traditional West Coast style, Sugar Shack is adorned with pretty candy pink colored shutters and furnished inside with white-washed furniture and carefully chosen art pieces that complement the interior. The cottage boasts an open-plan kitchen, dining and lounge area with TV as well as an enclosed veranda (called a ‘stoep’ in South Africa!) with breathtaking ocean views. The kitchen is very well-equipped so that you can eat in if you wish, although Paternoster offers a selection of stunning restaurants, too.

All three bedrooms are exquisitely decorated and offer comfortable beds and en suite bathrooms. Two of the spacious and well appointed bathrooms boast showers, and the third offers a Victorian bath.

The exterior and interior of this home is painted in the traditional "West Coast" white but is trimmed with pretty 'candy pink' shutters. White-washed furniture and carefully chosen original art pieces complement the home whilst all bedrooms are beautifully appointed with white linen and down pillows.

Life in Paternoster goes slowly and at a tranquil pace. The quaint little fishing town, which is located a mere 145km from Cape Town is one of the country’s oldest and has become very popular recently, offering excellent restaurants offering traditional Cape fare (the seafood on this coastline is legendary) as well as a choice of accommodation. But visitors don’t only come here for the excellent cuisine; they come to savor the breathtaking scenery, which is dotted with huge boulders and jagged cliffs, not to mention long unspoilt beaches just waiting to be explored.

If you’re looking for an untouched paradise in one of the most breathtaking settings imaginable, then you’ll find it here. And staying at Suger Shack will literally be the cherry on top.
