This April, art and culture in the form of the star-studded Tribeca Film Festival takes over downtown Manhattan. Baroque Travel takes a look at what’s on offer in the city’s annual celebration of movies, film makers and artists.
From Wednesday 15th to Thursday the 23rd April, the star-studded Tribeca Film Festival will be the talk of the town. Brainchild of superstar Robert De Niro, the coolest fest in New York City is now in its 14th year. It draws around half a million film fans every year – and we’re sure this year will be no exception. Aside from a selection of more than 1,000 films, which include high-profile movie premieres and lots of breakout indie film screenings, there’s also a stunning selection of events, including panels and talks held at various locations in Tribeca.
Although the full line-up may change, we do know what the opener will be – it’s the documentary created by Lorne Michaels about everybody’s favorite show, Saturday Night Live. And if that’s a taste of what’s on offer, you know you’re in for a treat.
One of the highlights of the festival will be a magnificent tribute to Frank Sinatra called Sinatra at 100: Film & Music. The centennial celebration honors Sinatra’s legendary film career and includes two classics from old Blue Eyes, High Society and Some Came Running, both of which will be shown on April 21st. This will be followed by a concert featuring various by vocalist Tony Bennet, R&B artist and three-time Grammy Award winner, Ne-Yo, choreaographer Savion Glover and many more, including the 12-piece JC Hopkins Biggish Band. This important event, it will be made available to audiences across the US with traditional viewing options as well as tracks from the concert and footage of behind the scenes through an app and the YouTube360 experience.
Another noteworthy musical event will be held the same evening when NYC hip-hop heavyweight A$AP Rocky and journalist Elliott Wilson get together at Spring Studios. Wilson will host the latest edition of his live interview series, CRWN with the young rapper as his guest. Wilson is renowned for transforming the two-year-old CRWN series, which is filmed live and airs on WatchLoud.com into the must-watch hip-hop program (it’s featured greats such as Lil Wayne, Drake, Nicki Minaj and R.Kelly). The 26-year-old Rocky, who hails from Harlem already has many claims to fame – he was Iggy Azalea’s boyfriend, led the A$AP Mob collective, and also acted in the movie Dope, a hit at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, which will be at theaters this summer. And let’s not forget he’s topped the Billboard charts on tracks that he’s collaborated with the likes of Rihanna and Skrillex.
Five exciting Virtual Reality events are scheduled for Spring Studios at 50 Varick Street, which will give audiences an opportunity to see the future of human interaction. The Virtual Reality Revolution includes various fascinating VR exhibitions on Saturday April 18, with famous digital artist and filmmaker Chris Milk at the helm. The VR master has directed music videos for Kanye West as well as some groundbreaking projects. His VR suprises include a magnificent humanitarian project produced by UNICEF where viewers will feel what it’s like to be a 12-year-old Syrian refugee in a Jordanian camp.
