Australian fashion takes the world by storm

There are some fashion heavyweights emerging Down Under as those who attended New York Fashion Week will attest. And one of the most talented is the Sydney-based duo Sass & Bide. Friends Sarah-Jane Clarke (Sass), and Heidi Middleton (Bide) left accounting and advertising behind them to launch a fashion label that has taken the world by storm.

They started with a denim collection in 1999 that symbolized their inimitable sense of style and free-spiritedness. Within two years they expanded their range to include ready to wear.  It was this individual sense of classic style in a signature mix of black and white, combined with exciting fabric designs, sometimes tribal, sometimes geometric, that gave them an international edge. It didn't take long for them to get noticed, and by 2002 they were delighting the fashion-savvy at London and New Fashion Weeks. They were the first Australian designers to be invited to New York Fashion Week in 2004, impressive considering none of them had any formal training as a fashion designer.

The duo calls their designs ‘a polished confusion’. “You can’t put the collection in any particular category,” they said. They purposefully combine feminine and masculine elements, offering sharply styled satin blazers with flowing tulle skirts and tight-fitting bustiers with relaxed trousers. The result is a new take on modern dressing, an opportunity for women to mixing different styles to create an individual look.

Sass & Bide left the New York catwalk for half a decade, but they returned last year to coincide with the opening of their first Manhattan boutique, located on Broome Street in Soho. Their Fall 2014 New York Fashion Week show offered a fresh, exciting mix of styles and designs to suit every eclectic taste. The whimsical Sass & Bide Fall 2014 Novateur Collection was inspired by 20th Century artist and biologist Ernst Haeckl and the result is a fascinating blend of science and nature, using cocoon motifs and hand-woven ribbon designs in a palette of lush green.
