Introducing the new iMac Pro, the most powerful Mac ever created by Apple, as well as the most expensive. Baroque Access takes a look
No, it’s not going to go on sale with all the other goods post-Christmas Day, but the new iMac Pro is something to consider for starting 2018 with style. Already billed as the “most powerful Mac ever” by those in the know, this masterpiece of technology is aimed at creative professionals who use Apple Macs but who have, until now, had to use the trusty Mac Pro.
First unveiled in June at Apple’s developer conference, this latest version is essentially the 27in 5K iMac with the processor, graphics chips, memory and storage turned up to 11. For the privilege, you’ll need to pay anything up to $16,440. According to Apple’s Vice President of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus, “The iMac Pro combines the incredible design of the iMac with the most powerful workstation architecture we’ve ever built. The iMac is the most popular desktop for our pro users due to its amazing display and elegant design, so we completely re-engineered it to deliver performance far beyond what anyone thought possible in an all-in-one.”
OK, you can get a cheaper one. The base model sells for t $6,560. For this you get an 8-core Intel Xeon processor, 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. But then there are all those extra options… we’re talking about up to 18-core processors, in which case most machines are either dual or quad-core. There are also AMD’s workstation-class graphics cards such as the Radeon Pro Vega 64, which take up to 128GB of RAM and up to 4TB of SSD storage.
Of course, like every Apple product ever created, it’s stylish and good looking. The brand new iMac Pro is finished in space grey with a matching keyboard and mouse.
But it’s definitely the power that everyone is writing about… Up to 18 cores (8, 10, 14 or 18, to be exact) with a Turbo Boost speed of up to 4.5GHz, this new iMac offers power and flexibility for those who wish to balance multicore processing with single-thread performance. The new AVX-512 vector instructions and cache architecture makes the processor able to handle even more data, and more quickly. You can render images, edit up to 8K video, manipulate photographs, create real-time audio effects of compile a new app, all at lightning speed.
The new iMac makes virtual reality real with its new Vega GPU. You can immerse yourself in Virtual Reality worlds or create them from scratch. Your call.
