A highlight of the social season as well as one of the most popular sporting events of the year, the Henley Royal Regatta comes up again in Britain in June 2017. Baroque Access finds out all about what is considered the most famous regatta in the world
Every year, thousands of people flock to the United Kingdom to attend the 5-day Henley Royal Regatta, which features more than 200 races of an international standard, including not only Olympians, but also crews that are new to the event. Aside from being a spectator at some of the best rowing in the world, visitors can also participate in all the activities and entertainment on offer, which includes a wide selection of bars and restaurants as well as shops, not to mention the scenic views of Henley and the River Thames.
This historic regatta has been entertaining avid fans and spectators since it was first held in 1839. And the 2017 regatta, which takes place from 28 June to 2 July, is expected to be even bigger and better than ever. One of the reasons for this is the collaboration with three luxury brands – auto makers Aston Martin, the Bremont Watch Company and clothing label Hackett London are the three official partners for what is one of the highlights of the British summer social scene.
Aston Martin, which has been operating in Britain for over a century is going to showcase its range of renowned sports cars including the acclaimed Grand Tourer during the Regatta and it will also provide transport for key officials and VIP guests during the 5-day event.
Every year the Henley Royal Regatta attracts over 300,000 visitors who line the banks of Henley-on-Thames to watch international crews race the famous course, a distance of 2.112km. Since the Regatta started in the 19th Century, there have been four different courses. This particular course was first used in 1924 and is in a straight line from below the Berkshire side of Temple Island in Henley all the way to Poplar Point.
All of the events that take place are grouped into different categories. The highest level features six open events for men, and six for women. The intermediate level includes three events for men, chosen from the best of the club and student crews. The next level has five events for the rest of the club and student rowers. The final level features two events for junior men and one event for junior women. The Regatta’s most prestigious event is the Grand Challenge Cup for Men's Eights. The draw for the races is held at 3pm on the Saturday before the Regatta starts in the town hall of the village of Henley on Thames. Races start on Wednesday 28 June.
